Poker chips or casino chips are the tokens used while playing games in casinos for representing actual money, that is, currency notes. These chips are easier to handle. Clay has been traditionally the most sought-after material to be used for manufacturing casino chips. Nowadays clay composite and ceramic materials are also used to manufacture these chips. Each casino guards their chips religiously, as loss of chips means loss of money. These chips are made in factories where production cost is very low. A majority of plastic chips are manufactured in China.

However, one alarming trend in the poker chip market is that some vendors sell the cheap, plastic chips as original casino clay chips. These plastic chips do not last half as long as original clay chips. The plastic chips are manufactured for occasional recreational use, while the clay chips are manufactured for regular use in casinos and clubs. The plastic or metal composite chips will have a clay coating. It is extremely difficult to distinguish between original clay chips and these partial clay-covered chips, especially for the newly converted poker enthusiasts. But experienced people find ways to identify the original chips. Here are some tips to spot the original clay chips.

Generally, one can identify original clay poker chips from their price. Original chips cost a minimum of one dollar per chip, while plastic chips cost less than that. But this is not an absolute rigid rule as a savvy merchant can sell plastic chips at the rate of one dollar per chip. So another thing is to go for the weight of the chip. Normally, real clay chip that is used in casinos weighs around 8.5 to 10 grams. Usually, plastic or metal composite chip weighs more. But still, there are plastic chips, which have weights in the range of 8.5 to 10 grams. So, one foolproof method that provides an unmistakable clue about the authenticity of clay chips is checking the sound that is made when a chip hits the tabletop or ground. Those who are familiar with the sound that clay chips make in casinos can easily spot the difference. Plastic or other varieties of chips cannot generate the same sound that the clay chips produce.
